Subject: [SVARA] BAND OF BROTHERS
Some history for all and especially for you members of my "Band of Brothers"
group. I was visiting with an old Navy Vet the other day and he asked me about
the MAKIN RAID and the return of the bodies of the 19 Marines that were recently
recovered and returned home. To those of you who may have missed the story here
is a brief history.
The Makin Raid was carried out by Carlson's Marine Raiders and the Submarines
Nautilis and Argonaut, who transported and landed the 222 Marines on Makin
Island in August 1942. During the operation 19 Marines were KIA and another 9
were listed as MIA. The Submarines furnished some well needed fire support with
those big deck guns.
They also transported the Marines back to Pearl Harbor.
19 of the Marines were buried in a mass grave which was located and the remains
identified. It was discovered later that the 9 that were listed as missing were
captured by the Japanese and sent to Kwajalein Island and were executed by
beheading. To this date their remains have not been recovered.
Now for the rest of the story. The body of one of the Marines rcovered was Pvt
Robert B Maulding of Vista California. I find that his older brother was
submariner George E Maulding TM3c who was aboard the USS Wahoo when she was
lost. I hope this helps you understand my unending loyalty to my "BAND OF
BROTHERS" group. If anyone would like to join its free and I have a nice
membership certificate. All I need is name, rank org or boat if applicable, and
call sign.
