PLAAF has bought four of them to supplement their now aging air traffic control radars. As a cost of a million US Dollars per unit, that is a good deal by anyone's standards. If the clever Chinese are up to their usual shrewd business acumen, they have just acquired the latest word in what can so easily become defense technology.
Reverse engineering -
remember that phrase? It is what gave the Russians the B-29 bomber which
they copied to the last nut and bolt (including some patches over bullet
holes) when a couple landed in the USSR following a raid on Japan in World
War II...........not the the Brits are any brighter. They gave them the
Rolls Royce Nene engine which in the Chinese/Russian sponsored tour of Korea
(the Korean war) was shooting at SABRE Jets and METEOR fighters and all the
UN aircraft it could!
That's right - that's AWACS as in USAF and RAF since we Brits screwed up NIMROD and the associated search radar and software. But there is light at the end of our tunnel - if one of the search radar sets goes down, doubtless one of our Oriental brethren will leap in with a spare micro chip or two to save the day! It will also come in handy to detect any US Navy or USAF aircraft coming in over the coast, should Taiwan become the next Chinese 'take-away'.
