Subject: Russian LADA Radar
Here we have some more Intel on the Russian LADA and
he capabilities from a group of S.E.I.G. Agents. They tell us that one of
the antennas looks as though it is a UHF (Ultra High Frequency) receiver
type. Being on the conning tower, it could easily be raised like a
periscope. The interesting point about the frequency coverage is that it
would be ideal for covert surveillance. The submarine could remain
submerged, detectable only by radar, and it could scan all UHF bands which
are those used with radar. Radar of the normal type works in the Giga-Herz
range.
The antenna that caught my eye is the one with the large circular
insulated pod around it. A normal whip would suffice for monitoring over
the horizon, which works on HF (High Frequency or short wave) and one or two
of the other arrays look as if they could be of that type.
OTH (Over The Horizon) radar is not limited to line of sight as is
normal radar. Most submarines communicate underwater by means of VLF (Very
Low Frequency) radio, or very long waves in the nature of 25 KHZ or lower.
This wavelength requires antenna measured in literally, a mile or two, and
thus employ trailing wire antennas, so we don't think any of the hoist array
antennas are for that. This VLF can be monitored by land based receivers,
but it is by no means easy.
The way this LADA is configured, she would make a
great surveillance platform and we would like to know if the Russians or
Chinese have the capability to launch CHAFF from underwater. (CHAFF is a
massive quantity of precisely cut strips and bands of aluminum foil to
defeat radar). If they can launch an ICBM, they probably can launch a CHAFF
dispensing missile.
One of our S.E.I.G. Agents reports that the CONFIRMED
specifications for the LADA are:
Displacement - 2,650 tons (submerged)
Length - 66.8 meters
Engine - Single shaft, single engine diesel
Power - 5,576 hp
Speed - 21 knots (submerged)
Tubes - Six 533mm tubes

From another S.E.I.G. Agent we learn that North Korea
has stopped talking with South Korea about peace in that region. This agent
believes that they are holding what they think is their ace - the
Russia/China alliance.
This agent also believes that the West should also be
looking at how far the Russians can travel and what kind of missiles will
they have on board. He thinks that if they have upgraded from the SCUD, it
would be time for U2 flights again.
