What's Behind Senator Warner's Rejection Of Warrior Widows DIC-SBP Justice?

November 05, 2005

So, Senator Warner, R-VA wants to "study" S185, "Military Retiree Survivor Benefit Equity Act of 2005,"  effectively removing this issue from any congressional action to repeal the VA Widows Death Tax which is a $1 for $1 offset of military Survivor Benefit Plan (SBP) annuities by VA survivors' dependency and indemnity compensation (DIC) prior to 2007

Is it to kill the "Bill" or play "political correct" games? Probably a little of both but emphasis leans toward being "politically correct".

Here's my take on Senator Warner's action along politically correct lines.

Most know the political climate in Florida can go either Republican or Democrat...every little variable that enhances one party or the other toward political victory is used...it makes no difference what the impact of the tactic, JUST WIN.

The Republicans are searching for a viable candidate to run against Senator Bill Nelson in 2006...they view Nelson vulnerable so no stone will be left unturned to defeat him.  They don't want Katherine Harris (I can understand that), so the Republican Senatorial Committee at this point is searching for that "special lackey" to challenge Senator Nelson.

What if Senator Nelson's legislation, "Military Retiree Survivor Benefit Equity Act of 2005," was successful?

How many military retirees, spouses, and widows live in Florida?  A bunch, a big bunch - probably more military retirees, veterans, spouse, widows in Florida than other State.

Would the success of the legislation translate to votes?  Probably, certainly bragging rights for Senator Nelson...bragging rights are important in a close race.  Sorry widows, if Republicans can't get bragging rights, you lose.

It wouldn't be possible that the Republican apparatus, through Senator Warner, is attempting to delay or kill Senator Nelson's legislation to take any positive advantage he might gain in Florida?   Of course, the Republicans are really focusing on kill Nelson politically...they don't care about our widows, which points out the disgusting nature of politics.

I'm surprised at Senator Warner agreeing to be used in such a callous manner...place our warrior widows on the chopping block of "political correctness", disregard what is right, all done at the alter of the "party".  There is absolutely no shame in politics...sacrifice our warrior widows for political gain.

Make no mistake, this kind of treachery is practiced by both parties...if the Democrats have an opportunity for political gain, they will do the same thing....as for Senator Warner's action, it is shameful and brings discredit on himself.
