More than3,000 National Guard and Reserve Members
Purchase TRICARE Reserve Select
August 26, 2005
No. 05-27
TRICARE Reserve Select (TRS) coverage became available April 26, 2005, for
certain members and former members of the National Guard and Reserve and their
family members. As of today, more than 3,000 eligible National Guard and
Reserve members are enrolled in the new premium-based health plan offered for
purchase by the Department of Defense (DoD) for a total of more than 9,000
covered lives.
Nearly 8,500 other members have taken steps to purchase TRS. To qualify for TRS
coverage, National Guard and Reserve members must have served on active duty for
90 days or more in support of a contingency operation on or after Sept. 11,
2001, and executed a service agreement with their Service/Reserve Component to
continue serving in the Selected Reserve.
Monthly TRS premiums are $75 for member-only coverage and $233 for member and
family coverage. In the spring, DoD mailed a letter and a TRS fact sheet to
these eligible National Guard and Reserve members who separated on or before
April 26, 2005.
These members were informed that they have until Oct. 28, 2005, to execute their
service agreement with their Service/Reserve Component or give up their
opportunity to purchase TRS coverage. Instructions for National Guard and
Reserve members initiating a service agreement (DD Form 2895) are available on
the Guard-Reserve Web portal at
https://www.dmdc.osd.mil/Guard-ReservePortal.
Eligible National Guard and Reserve members who separate from active duty on or
after April 27, 2005, must enter into a service agreement with their
Service/Reserve Component by their last day of active duty service. A TRS
handbook, a list of Reserve Component points of contact and other TRS
educational materials are available on the TRICARE Web site at
www.tricare.osd.mil/reserve/reserveselect. http://www.tricare.osd.mil/news/2005/news0527.cfm
