"Veterans
Day History"

Veterans Day
honors
men and women who have served in the U.S. armed services. Veterans Day, November
11th, is a legal federal holiday in the U.S. Great Britain celebrates November
11th as Armistice Day; it is not a legal holiday but special observances
celebrate the armistice that ended World War I on November 11, 1918. France also
calls it Armistice Day. Canada has a legal holiday called Remembrance Day that
is celebrated on November 11th. Veterans Day celebrations in the United States
include parades and speeches. Special services are held at the Tomb of the
Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia; they begin with 2
minutes of silence, then after the playing of taps, a wreath is placed at the
tomb which houses the graves of 3 unknown Americans who fought in World War I,
World War II, and the Korean War. In a ceremony in Washington, D.C., a wreath is
placed at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial to honor those who died in the Vietnam
War.
In 1919, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11th as
Armistice Day to remind Americans of the tragedies of war. A law adopted in 1938
made the day a federal holiday. In 1954, Congress changed the name of the
holiday to Veterans Day to honor all U.S. veterans. From 1971 through 1977,
Veterans Day was celebrated on the 4th Monday in October. Our national holidays
have a common factor: they honor our country or its traditions and customs.
Celebrating America's past, present, and future is a function of each holiday.
Veterans Day is a time to remember those men and women who served in our U.S.
Armed Forces.
Many people confuse Memorial Day and Veterans Day.
Memorial Day
is a day for remembering and honoring military personnel who died in the service
of their country, particularly those who died in battle or as a result of wounds
sustained in battle. While those who died are also remembered on Veterans Day,
Veterans Day
is the day
set aside to thank and honor ALL those who served honorably in the military - in
wartime or peacetime. In fact, Veterans Day is largely intended to thank LIVING
veterans for their service, to acknowledge that their contributions to our
national security are appreciated, and to underscore the fact that all those who
served - not only those who died - have sacrificed and done their duty.
A complete
history of Veterans Day, and why it is observed on November 11, can be found
on the
Veterans Day History
Web page.

As citizens of the United States, we have many freedoms people of other
countries
do not have. We have luxuries, both materialistic and untouchable, making our
lives
and our children's lives so very much better.
However, these luxuries did not come without a price.
Many U.S. Military men and women encountered some of the most gruesome battles,
triumphing over some of the biggest nations to maintain the very freedoms we
have today.
As U.S. Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen & Marines they left the soil of their own
country to save the solid ground we walk on today, forever changing their lives
and that of their families.
Sadly, Many paid for our freedom with their own lives.
As U.S. Citizens, we all owe much gratitude to those who have fought for us and
our country. Because we all treasure the peace and freedom we have today, Thank
You !
American
Veteran
Search
Would like to Thank each and every Veteran, military man and woman, both past
and present, for admirably fighting for and maintaining our freedoms.

Searching for Army buddy Korea 1957-1960
Jack
Harold Jones SP 5 from Bakersfield California
Sir, First of all I'd like you to know how hopeful our family is that my
father will finally be able to speak to an old Army buddy that he served with in
Korea from 1957-1960. My father's name is Roland W. Johnson, his hometown is
Duluth, Minnesota. He has often lamented that "If only I could talk to Jack ".
The man who served with my father is
Jack Harold Jones SP 5 from Bakersfield California.
We've been able to learn that his last known address was Axminister St.
Bakersfield, CA. He and his wife Marjo apparently sold this home in February of
2004.

USS
Independence / RVAH-1 / 1965
I have been looking for "C Mark Cummings" for a very long time. He was on the
USS Independence from May 1965 to Dec 1965 with RVAH-1. We wrote to one another
during that period of time, but were unable to find one another when he returned
- for reasons that would probably make a good movie. I knew him as "Mark" and I
don't believe I ever knew what the "C" stood for.
I sincerely appreciate any help you can give me.
Thanks again.

As of
now, Very few have responded with help in our first attempt to help keep the
site running. So things are going a little slow right now. But with some
continued support it does look like we will continue to keep the site running
for as long as we can afford it. When push comes to shove, Jack and I will be
dipping into our pockets for a while longer. It would really tear our hearts out
to pull the plug. Though, We would like to Thank everyone that has found it in
their hearts to send a small donation to help keep this website running.
On the other hand it still amazes me to see that more of our Members are not
willing to help us out with just $1.00. We have over
4 million
members
and we never turned anyone down for anything no matter if they paid the fee or
not, this could keep the site running forever. I hope we can figure something
out here.

The
National Purple Heart Hall of Honor is currently under construction in New

ensure that all recipients are represented. Their stories will be preserved and
shared through exhibits, live and videotaped interviews with the veterans
themselves, and the Roll of Honor, an interactive computer program preserving
the stories of each individual. The National Purple Heart Hall of Honor the
