A. CAPT Gordon W. Engquist, USN (Ret)
CAPT Gordon W. Engquist, USN (Ret), died 29 August 2006 from the effects of cancer. He served as a submarine officer while on active duty in various capacities on the following submarines: COBBLER; SIRAGO; and, RUNNER. He was the Commanding Officer of ARCHERFISH and SEA CAT. From 1974 to 1976, he was the Commanding Officer of the US Naval Communications Station, Wahiawa, Oahu, in Hawaii. Upon retirement in 1978, he served as a consultant to a Defense contractor. He leaves a widow, Aud, daughters, Kristine and Annemarie, son-in-law Steven, and grandson, Jonathan. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations to his memory be sent to your local chapter of the National Cancer Society.
B. Rear Admiral Russell L. Marlor, Medical Corps, USN (Ret) Rear Admiral Russ Marlor, passed away on Friday 4 August 2006 after a long illness. He was instrumental in the start-up and establishment of the modern submarine medical program. He is survived by his wife, Estelle, of 46 years, two daughters Felise and Robin and three grand daughters, Irene, Julia and Elsa. RADM Marlor will be interred, with full honors, at Arlington National Cemetery.
RADM Marlor started his 43 year career in 1947 when he enlisted in the Ready Reserve near his home in Magna, Utah. Following enlistment he was awarded a NROTC Scholarship at the University of Utah and was commissioned an Ensign upon graduation reporting aboard the USS. O'Brien (DD 725). Shortly thereafter he completed training at the Submarine School and served on the USS. Redfish (SS 395) where he qualified in Submarines.
From 1955 to 1962 RADM Marlor left active duty while he attended the Graduate School at the University of Utah receiving a Master's Degree in Medical Entomology followed by a "tour" at the School of Medicine, University of Utah where he received his medical degree.
Returning to active duty in 1962 RADM Marlor entered service in the Medical Corps with internship at the Naval Hospital in San Diego immediately followed by one year of training as a Nuclear Submarine Medical Officer.
Upon graduation he was assigned to the Commissioning Crew of the USS STONEWALL JACKSON (SSBN 634) as the Gold Crew Medical Officer followed by assignment as Pre-commissioning and Blue Crew Medical Officer on the USS KAMEHAMEHA (SSBN 642). He also served on the staff of SUBRON One.
From 1968 to 1971 RADM Marlor completed residency training in preventive medicine at the School of Public Health, University of California, Berkeley followed by tours of duty in Epidemiology in San Diego and Naples, Italy. In Italy he was the senior medical officer in the Preventive Medicine Unit for the entire Mediterranean theatre.
During the period from 1978 to 1983 RADM Marlor served as the Head of Preventive Medicine Branch, BUMED, then as Director Occupational and Preventive Medicine Division, and as the Director of the Undersea and Radiation Monitoring Division.
In 1983 RADM Marlor was assigned as the Commanding Officer of the Naval Hospital, Groton, CT. While serving in that position he was promoted to Flag Rank in January 1986.
RADM Marlor served as Fleet Surgeon, U.S. Pacific Fleet and Surgeon U.S Pacific Command. In June 1990 he was assigned duties as director, Medical Plans and Policy, Office of the Chief of Naval operations. He retired in May 1990.
