were held today in Lemoore, CA. "Nellie" was born May 22,1926 and passed
away July 27, 2006. Fleet Reserve #261 officiated with an honor guard from
NAS Lemoore.

it is my sad duty and solemn honor to inform you that our Shipmate, Howard
L. Nelson, has received his final orders and departed on Eternal Patrol. I
presided at his funeral on Friday, 4 August 2006. A copy of his Obit is

Howard L. Nelson, of Lemoore, passed away Thursday, July 27, 2006 at the
Hanford Community Medical Center. Howard was 80 years old.
Howard was born in Mason, Illinois, on May 22, 1926 to Bert and Zeffie
Nelson.
He served 30 years total service in the U.S. Navy and retired with the rank
of Chief Petty Officer, Electricianıs Mate. Howard later retired from Civil
Service at NAS Lemoore.
He entered the service in August of 1943 and was assigned on the USS
Southard. Howard served on several submarines, including the USS Charr, USS
Redfish, USS Sea Devil, USS Diodon, and USS Rock.
During his World War II service, he was awarded the ³Asiatic-Pacific,²
American Area,² ³Philippine Liberation,² ³World War II Victory,² and ³Navy
Unit Commendation² medals.
Howard was a member of the Military Order of the Louse, Hut 36; Fleet
Reserve Association, Branch 261; American Legion, 120 (Effingham, IL);
Veterans of Foreign Wars, 7988; and Hanford Elks Lodge, 1259.
Howard is survived by two daughters, Nancy Gallegos of Marina del Rey, and
Carol Carollo of Lemoore; son, Howard L. Nelson, Jr. of Topock, Arizona;
grandson, Travis Nelson of Gillette, Wyoming; three sisters, Clarice
Cogswell, Lucy Hamman, and Peggy Meier; and sister-in-law Thelma Nelson. He
was preceded in death by brothers Wayne Nelson, Donald Nelson, Norman
Nelson, and Everett Nelson; and sister Juanita Kralman.
Graveside services will be held at 9:00am on Friday, August 4, 2006, at the
Lemoore Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Phipps Dale
Funeral Chapel in Lemoore.
Remembrances in Howardıs name may be sent to Armed Forces Foundation, a
non-profit charity organization associated with Bethesda Naval Hospital,
located at 16 North Carolina Avenue, SE, Washington, D. C. 20003 and Kings
County Commission on Aging, located at 1197 South Drive, Hanford, CA 93230.
