"Roy, Thx for the good news
but who were those 19 that voted against the FENCE???? and of the 19 who
are up for re-election? Just wondering." ----------Bob Johnson SENATORS WHO SWITCHED ON FENCE VOTE ... AND OTHER ANALYSIS I just sent you the news about the Senate voting 80-19 to pass H.R. 6061 to build 700 miles of fence at the most strategic parts of our 2,000-mile border with Mexico. Last night (Thursday) in the wonderful 71-28 vote to stop debate and potentially allow the final vote on the fence, we were amazed that so many open-borders Senators voted on our side. We also were interested in the 28 Senators who, in the face of incredible public attention and voter pressure, would still oppose further securing the border. Well, tonight, we got 9 more votes. What happened? ANTI-FENCE LAST NIGHT but switched to PRO-FENCE TONIGHT You folks in these states -- and who called these Senators' offices .... .... You've got to take some credit for helping all of these feel the heat -- and getting out of the frying pan. Boxer (D-CA) Carper (D-DE) Clinton (D-NY) Dodd (D-CT) Harkin (D-IA) Kohl (D-WI) Obama (D-IL) Schumer (D-NY) Clinton, Carper and Kohl are up for re-election this fall. One can also imagine that Clinton continues to try to position herself for the 2008 presidential primaries as being in the political middle -- tough on future illegal immigration and pro-amnesty for illegal aliens already here. Thursday night, Clinton cast her vote to please her New York City constituents and leftist Primary voters across the country in 2008. Tonight (Friday), Clinton cast her vote to please upstate New York voters this year and General election voters across the country in 2008. I can see Obama doing some of the same kinds of political calculations. Whatever the reasons, your faxing and phoning persuaded those 8 Senators that standing against the fence just had too much political downside and it was time to build the fence. SKIPPED THE VOTE LAST NIGHT but switched to PRO-FENCE TONIGHT Snowe (R-ME) Nice to see. ANTI-FENCE LAST NIGHT but switched to SKIPPING THE VOTE TONIGHT Kennedy (D-MA) Don't know what this was about. ANTI-FENCE LAST NIGHT and still ANTI-FENCE TONIGHT Bob Johnson, below are the 19 whom you sought to know. Say what you will about them, my guess is that they are principled Senators. That is, the political downside to voting as they did is so great that I am persuaded that most of these 19 are being true to their principles. And this would indicate that one of their highest principles is either: 1. They favor massive flows of foreign workers to keep wages down and certain industries happy. 2. They are so in favor of an amnesty for illegal aliens that they will oppose passing any enforcement for fear that that will weaken their ability to bargain for the amnesty in the future. 3. They oppose slowing any kind of flow of mostly poor foreign nationals whom they hope eventually will become Democratic voters (as the largest portion of foreign workers do once they become citizens). 4. Or all three. VOTING NO ON THE FENCE TONIGHT Akaka (D-HI) Bingaman (D-NM) Cantwell (D-WA) Chafee (R-RI) Durbin (D-IL) Feingold (D-WI) Inouye (D-HI) Jeffords (I-VT) Kerry (D-MA) Lautenberg (D-NJ) Leahy (D-VT) Levin (D-MI) Lieberman (D-CT) Menendez (D-NJ) Murray (D-WA) Reed (D-RI) Reid (D-NV) Salazar (D-CO) Sarbanes (D-MD) I underlined all the ones who are up for re-election this fall. You may look forward to a chance to work against those incumbents over the next few weeks. Find links to their website and information about their opponents at: Our Candidates Website at www.CongressGrades.org Two of the Senators on the list are retiring: Jeffords and Sarbanes. THE REST OF THEM VOTED YES FOR THE FENCE I'm especially proud of those of you who phoned and argued and pleaded with the offices of the following Senators who made it very clear how much they did NOT want to vote for this fence bill. But they voted for it, anyway. Martinez (R-FL) Graham (R-SC) Specter (R-PA) McCain (R-AZ) Brownback (R-KS) DeWine (R-OH) BACKGROUND In case you didn't see my earlier email, here is what happened tonight: The Senate just finished passing the U.S. House of Representative's fence bill. It will now go to President Bush who has promised to sign it. This is a stand-alone bill. It was not bundled with any compromises, any increases in immigration, any new guestworker visas or any amnesty. It deals only with making our southern border more secure and to further impede the flow of illegal workers and dependents. This bill basically is the only step forward that Congress has taken this year in the fight against out-of-control mass immigration. It is sad that this is all we got when we consider the great promise of the ATTRITION THROUGH ENFORCEMENT bill (H.R. 4437) passed last December by the House. But the Senate refused to deal with it unless it could add an amnesty and incredible increases in legal immigration. In addition, we have to remember that the bill tonight was not an appropriations bill. The money to fund the fence must come in another bill. Money for a few hundred miles appears to be in the pipeline, but the Senate so far has not shown signs of being willing to provide all the money to build all 700 miles. Nonetheless, there will be plenty of money to get started. As this fence begins to be erected at and near the populated settlements along the Mexican border -- and as it clearly slows the illegal traffic -- we can hope that steps of success will breed more interest and more money for more fence in Congress next year.
