Roy,
It is impressive that the New York Times gave this much space to NumbersUSA. With one exception, I believe the article is quite accurately descriptive of NumbersUSA and our mission.
However, there is one "obscure" where they have inserted a slur designed to stigmatize NumbersUSA with racial discrimination, which I believe we should strongly refute and object to (unless it is true of course). That is the statement in the paragraph that is in red, the second sentence, which states, "“Roy Beck takes people who are upset about illegal immigration for different reasons, including hostility to Latino immigrants, and disciplines them so their message is based on policy rather than race-based arguments or xenophobia.”
I strongly object to the phrase they used "...including hostility to Latino Immigrants,....." In my opinion, this is racist and the New York Times should be held accountable for promoting this lie. Hostility toward Latino Immigrants had nothing to do with our objects, reasoning, and actions. In reality, I believe we won because our position was COMMON SENSE. Is there not some way you can throw this back in the face of the New York Times for promoting racism?
I am also presenting here a copy of a letter I wrote to our Florida Senator who ignored his constituents and voted contrary to our wishes in support of the Amnesty Bill. I believe this letter further codify's our Immigration Reform concerns, and puts it all into an easy to understand, implement, and support perspective that sums up the majority of our real concerns against blanket amnesty. As you are aware, their is now a recall move afoot against the FL Senator Martinez for his failure to recognize or support Florida Constituents against S.1639. As the Senator became aware of this, he started back pedaling to justify his position. Here is a copy of my response to his reply, which has been reviewed and deemed appropriate by many Floridians who are now members of NumbersUSA. You are free to use this letter, publicize it, or do anything you deem necessary to help solidify Americans opposition to any attempt to revive this issue or to slip parts of it into other bills.

Senator,
After receiving feedback from many constituents who read my response to you before, the majority opinion is that I short-changed my answer in my attempt to be polite and in the process, I did not address the key issues; issues that more clearly define the problems with your stand for S.1639, the so-called Amnesty Bill for Illegal Aliens. Therefore, let me offer some ways you could redeem yourself in the eyes of Florida's voters before the next election. All you need to do is sponsor an Immigration Reform Bill now that accomplishes the principles I outline below, and succeed in preventing any other legislation to water down, amend or otherwise dilute the full intent of these elements.
First, let me point out what your constituents are saying. This is important since you have not been listening to us. We believe that you had no intention of doing the right thing in this legislation based on your actions. You make note that there is a need to change the immigration laws. Do you think we are all a bunch of dummies? Do you think we do not know that your idea of change is to ease immigration restrictions instead of tightening them? That is not compatible with how your constituents feel.
Here are some basic steps that do require changing:
1) All immigrants must speak English (only natural so they can obey our laws).
2) All immigrants must take naturalization tests in English and assimilate into America. A major problem in the system today is that there too many immigrant communities where they are loyal to their countries of origin, and NOT to the USA.
3) We need to address the problem of cutting off freebies that are now being paid for on the backs of American Citizens. This in itself will "inspire" the majority of illegals to return to their home countries on their own.
4) We need to send anyone who does not adopt this country's principles and laws back to where they came from. If they are not here to assimilate, then chances are they are here to assassinate.
5) We need to enforce the legislation, laws, and controls that are already on the books before we start making more of them.
6) You need to support America and American Citizens first, not the illegal criminals.
7) All illegal immigrants must return to their home of origin, learn English, and then apply to immigrate into our County via legal processes to redeem themselves. The fact that they are criminals is of their doing, not ours. They need to repent, not us.
8) We need to enforce absolute control of the US Borders. That means we do whatever is necessary to enforce current laws against illegal entry into the USA. It does not mean we jail our Border Patrol Agents for enforcing the laws of our land. It means that we jail illegal criminals for breaking our laws. It means we give our National Guard Troops weapons and the means to enforce and stop Border infiltrations, and stop playing tag with the illegals.
9) We need to set up procedures for the employment of legals, and enforce it so that illegals cannot be employed.
10) It means you, Sir, must stop thinking in terms of being a profiteering, career politician, and get back to thinking AMERICAN.
Now this is the kind of bill we need to start real Immigration Reform in America. You stated yourself that any solution to this problem must be practical to be effective. Ok, I have outlined and spelled PRACTICAL for you. If you can generate a bill that takes in all that I have stated above in the very near future, you might redeem yourself in the eyes of your constituents, and you will have truly reformed Immigration beyond anything that has been proposed so far. Want to be a hero? Here is your chance. Otherwise my friend, we see you as nothing but hot air that needs to be recalled and striped of all duties as our State's Senator so that you can stop contributing to global warning by closing your mouth. We don't want you if you cannot or will not represent us for true immigration reform.
Can you think in these terms? This is not the entire problem or solution, of course, but it is the place where Congress should be starting, not throwing up your hands and pleading Amnesty for all the criminals because politicians want the illegal votes or are afraid to stand up and be counted Pro-America. We DON'T need to give our Country away to non-American criminal elements; neither do we need to appease them.
And be warned again; the talk among your constituents today is that since you are not for us, you must be against us. And a serious recall action is even now underway. How it plays out will depend in large part what you do about this illegal immigration problem to resolve it, not to complicate it or forget it. Believe me, it is not going to go away; but you might. The ball is now in your court!
Sincerely,
Lowell J. Mix

Below is a
response to the recent comments I received from you:
Dear Friend:
Thank you for contacting me regarding immigration reform. I appreciate hearing
from you and would like to respond to your concerns.
As you may know, on June 28, 2007, the Senate voted to set aside debate once
again on the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act of 2007 (S.1639).
I firmly believe addressing this issue in a comprehensive manner is critical to
our nation’s security and continued prosperity. While securing our borders is
top priority, we must also address the economic and law enforcement realities of
having millions of illegal immigrants already living and working in the United
States. Any solution to this problem must be practical to be effective. Efforts
to secure our borders should be coupled with necessary changes to our current
ambiguous and ineffective immigration policies to maximize security for our
country. Additionally, gaining operational control of the border will not cease
the problem if we do not gain control of our employment system. Please know
that, I will continue to work with President Bush and my colleagues in Congress
to develop a plan that will halt the flow of illegal immigrants crossing our
border while implementing needed changes to our immigration laws.
Again, thank you for sharing your thoughts with me. Do not hesitate to contact
me with any additional questions or comments. For more information about issues
and activities important to Florida, please sign up for my weekly newsletter at

Sincerely,
Mel Martinez
