Strict
Indian Gun Law Aided Mumbai Terrorists in Attack
CNSNews.com) – India’s
strict gun laws are partly to blame for the success of the terrorist attack in
Mumbai, according to the head of an Indian gun rights group and a U.S. expert
who has examined the impact of gun laws on crime and terrorism.
Abhijeet Singh, founder of Indians for Guns, told CNSNews.com Tuesday that if
the citizens of Mumbai had been allowed to carry guns, terrorists would not have
killed as many people as they did--and might have been deterred from attacking
in the first place.
In last month’s Mumbai
attack, when terrorists armed with AK-47 assault rifles took over two resort
hotels, local residents, hotel security guards and even local police were caught
empty-handed and unarmed.
“That’s because India’s gun
laws make it nearly impossible for its citizens to own guns,” Singh said in a
telephone interview from Delhi.
Singh said his group has
long fought against the India Arms Act, which doesn’t bar all guns outright.

Why
Mumbai, India?
What makes a terrorist
choose one target over another when planning to machine gun and grenade attack
innocent people in a crowded public place?
Is the target selection based on some perceived geopolitical transgressions
against the terrorists’ demented cause? The terrorist would like the world to
think so, but if that was the case, why didn’t the latest attack happen in a
place like Israel?
Why Mumbai, India?
Here is a letter I received from someone who knows the real reason why
terrorists would strike Mumbai, India over Tel Aviv, Israel or even Houston,
Texas.
You won’t see this talked about on the evening news…
India has draconian gun laws.
To currently keep a gun you have demonstrate a direct threat on your life, and
surrender it as soon as the threat is gone. You need to go to the police station
every month and show your gun for a checkup to the police officer there, show
the bullets you have, in case if you fired them then show the casings and tell
them where you used them.
Not just civilians even police officers who use their weapons have to collect
the casings to be included in their report of where and why did they fire their
weapon.
In simple words, it is an example of a society which has completely disarmed
itself. It is like a bunch of sheep.
The terrorists which landed in Mumbai through sea routes were armed to the
teeth.....

HOW LONG DO WE

It
has been now over a week since the election and we have seen entire gun
stores sold out of ammo, guns, and just about every accessory.
It
seems that many of those Americans who were putting off buying their "gear"
got the sudden realization that if they didn't move now, they might be left
out in the cold. Amazing that they hadn't thought about this before. We
will talk some about how long we have realistically and what you can do
about it here - as well as a few other important things....

If Cops Can’t Hit in a Gunfight, How Good Are You Going to Be?
Where did all the bullets
go?
Not long ago, the New York Times carried an article that revealed one of
law enforcement’s deepest, darkest secrets. Though most agencies are
loathe to admit it (and some do not even track it), the vast majority of
the bullets police officers fire in the line of duty miss their intended
target.
I was not surprised to find striking similarity in the results reported
by Los Angeles on the left coast and New York City on the right. I found
almost identical numbers ten years ago when analyzing the shooting
results of a large mid-western agency. And to prove that the situation
is apparently little changed from a hundred years ago, consider this
Theodore Roosevelt quote from when he was the New York City Police
Commissioner: “It is wonderful, in the event of a street fight, how few
bullets seem to hit the men they are aimed at.”
How bad is it? Well, both NYPD and LAPD give hit-rates that hover around
30 percent. In the article, New York claimed a 34 percent hit rate,
while LA listed a 31 percent hit rate last year. But, upon a closer
read, you will find that even these low numbers misstate the real facts.
You see, these 30 percent hit rates include shots fired at dogs, cars,
and even police suicides, which tragically run about 100 percent hits.
During 1999 in New York, only 13 percent of the bullets fired during
police gunfights struck home. During 2006, NYPD’s gunfight hit rate was
a much better 30 percent, but we don’t have enough information to know
if this was a maintainable improvement or just a statistical
variation....

A reader wants to know WHY Offthebeanvine 12 24 08

Today, a response to a reader.
IN THE SPIRIT OF THE FAIRNESS DOCTRINE
My comments are in red.
Okay, your letter is
very confused and unfocused but I will try to respond to your,
uh, concerns.
Hi
Beanvine, I got a forwarded message of anger and frustration
from you about the election. I shoot at targets. I don't kill
animals. I went into my local gun shop to ask a new 9mm
revolver gun.
I
am unaware of any commonly manufactured revolver that fires a
9mm parabellum round. I saw one once at a gunshow but it
required a half moon retainer-clip to use in a revolver. This
weapon was what I would call a fad-fancy and never caught on in
the market. They are quite rare because gun manufacturers do not
mass produce loss leader products and such a weapon would indeed
be a loss-leader and very few would be purchased except by
collectors. Therefore I am not surprised that there were none.
If you examine a 9mm parabellum round it is made to be cycled by
an autoloader feed system and would not work in a revolver due
to extraction and seating problems..however, do go on.

A Split Second Advantage
During a Mugging...
Let me share a thought
here. Let us look at a gun carrying permit totting individual who had done it
all right, gotten a permit, serious training, and picked a weapon with serious
accuracy and practiced with until they know they can put the shots on-target
with speed to set in place a sound defensive response.
The question is, on a night out with a loved one, an incident suddenly unfolds,
and the person finds out they have something in the equation that doesn't seem
to have been factored in, the loved one standing by their side when it all hits
the fan. This situation is now serious and limits the defender in several ways.
First the very presence of their loved one in the line of incoming fire will
distract the defender, as well put the loved one in the line potential out-
going fire!
Secondly, their position at your side means you can not turn in that direction
to scan or cover an incoming threat. The bad guy may even use this to limit your
response in a timely manner....

Armed Robbery - CCWs- Watch your BACK!..
I was talking with my
lady friend about an armed robbery that she was involved in years ago while she
was working as employee of 7-11 in Denver. She and another woman employee were
in the store working, there were two small neighborhood children in the store
along with a man who was in the back of the store shopping, suddenly a man comes
in with a mask on and points a .357 at the women and demands the money in the
safe. the women try to explain that the safe was on a time lock and they could
not open the safe for at least 10 minutes. they only had about $40.00 in the
register and the armed robber was getting very angry.
What the women in the store did not know was that a woman across the street from
the store saw two men beside the store and she saw the armed robber put the mask
over his face so she drove down the one way street in front of the store the
wrong way because she saw a police car up the street. She was able to advise the
officer that an armed robbery was in progress at the store....

After The Shooting
"...there are
some things that you need to remember..."
THE BEST ARTICLE OF 2008..
As self-defense oriented people, we tend to think about the actual encounter a
lot, and seldom, if ever, about what we should do in the aftermath. If you are
unlucky enough to be involved in a violent encounter, there are some things that
you need to remember to maximize your chances of a successful outcome.
Call for help immediately. Even if you produced the gun and your assailant
retreated with no shots fired, call the police. If there is somebody out there
worth pulling a gun on, then the cops need to know about it. They may have just
gone around the corner to pick an easier victim.
As soon as it is safe for you to do so, call 911. Always ask for an ambulance.
If somebody has been shot, whether injured or even if you are a hundred percent
sure that they are dead, I still want you to ask for medical attention. First
off, killing people sucks, so if I've got an injured assailant, I don't want him
to die, I just wanted to make him leave me alone. Second, if you don't ask for
medical attention, then there is a good chance that fact will be brought up
during any potential trial. Basically it is just another tool of a prosecutor
trying to portray the permit holder as a blood-thirsty vigilante.
If humanly possible, have your weapon secured before the police arrive, at least
in your holster, but definitely not in your hand. The responding officers do not
know you, and the information they got from dispatch was probably sketchy at
best. The last thing you want to do is survive a violent encounter only to get
shot by the cops because they think you're the bad guy. ...

AMBIDEXTROUS
GUNFIGHTING!
Go to any Force on
Force class and watch the students. Invariably, you'll find the
majority of them get shot in the hands. This is due to several factors.
Primarily, the shooter is placing the gun midway between him and the adversary,
thus any incoming rounds will likely impact the gun and hands. Secondly, the
adversary may visually focus on the gun thus orienting his physical index toward
the gun as he fires. And finally, it could just be pure chance. Nevertheless,
if anything is going to be hit, its very likely to be the hands.
This brings up some interesting needs in training. The
majority of shooters spend time training material they already know. Its an ego
thing. The majority of shooters are also highly deficient in one handed
shooting skills, or in shooting with their less dexterous hand. Let's remember
that although firing a pistol with two hands generally yields better result, the
weapon was intended to be a one-handed weapon. This leads us to an analysis of
Ambidextrous Shooting (some call it Bi-Lateral Shooting). Specifically we need
to address why its needed, when it may employed, and how to train the skill.
Other than the wounded shooter factor, are there any other situations where
on-handed shooting would be required? ...

Are you Prepared for a
Violent Encounter..?
I've been a concealed carry
instructor for five years, I hang out with a bunch of gun nuts, and I've been
around self-defense buffs for most of my adult life. In that time I've seen a
recurring theme, and unfortunately it can be a dangerous one. Many of us have
something in common.
I call it My Gunfight. We've imagined a scene, a violent encounter, in our head.
And in this scene, we take decisive action and we prevail and save the day. Many
of us have a mental fabrication of what My Gunfight is going to be like.
Most people who chose to carry a gun have done this. I have myself. It isn't
anything to be ashamed of. In fact, it really helps develop a proper mindset to
be able to realistically assess what kind of terrible things can happen to you
and start laying some groundwork about how we want to respond.
The problem comes in when we make assumptions about My Gunfight. Assumptions are
awesome when they're actually right, but they sure can hurt when you're wrong.
I have had students tell me that they never practice at anything past
conversational distance, because the average gunfight takes place at only seven
feet. See, in Their Gunfight, the bad guy will be conveniently placed at a
distance that they can actually hit stuff....

Armed and nervous in Alaska - Fears rise that Democrats will assault Second
Amendment rights
On
the neatly stacked ammunition shelves at the Alaska Shooters Supply is a sign:
"There is no such thing as too much ammo."
But in recent days, there
has been concern about too little.
Over the past week, ammunition has been selling by the pallet-load at the shop.
Guns, particularly military-style weapons, are a hot ticket.
And high-capacity magazines were selling so well, the Boniface Parkway shop ran
out the week of the Nov. 4 election.
That's no coincidence. Fear of stiffer gun laws after Barack Obama's successful
presidential bid and a Congress with a larger Democratic edge is prompting gun
enthusiasts across the country to stock up in record numbers.
"Obama is the best gun salesman we've had in the last 50 years," said Jack
Murray, Alaska Shooters Supply owner. "We sold more guns (the day after the
election) than I have on any one particular day in 21 years. I was crying all
the way to the bank."...

Where is my gun when I need it?
"...Being the gung-ho young cop that he was, he yelled
"police, freeze!"..."
As they were
exiting their unmarked vehicle a male climbed out of the cab ahead of them. He
drew what Ted described as "a chrome-plated automatic", and started firing at
another person who was still in the back seat of the cab.
(Allow me to digress as I explain that Ted, taking advantage of his now much
looser dress requirements, had taken to wearing all manner of holsters. He
alternated between a shoulder holster, crossdraw, strong side hip, appendix, and
even ankle. He made the decision about which one to wear almost on a whim each
morning. I'm sure you're beginning to see where this is going.)
Ted, who was exiting on the curb side of the vehicle, was in direct line of
sight of the suspect. Being the gung-ho young cop that he was, he yelled
"police, freeze!" as he reached for his gun. The perp turned toward the source
of the command, and seeing two witnesses in suits raised his pistol in their
direction and started firing.
Here's where the story gets interesting: Ted habitually reached for the spot
where his uniform belt had always placed his gun. Of course, it wasn't there! I
wish I could convey the level of comical panic that he did, but the gist is that
he started patting himself all over, trying to find his gun while at the same
time diving for cover behind his car door. "I couldn't remember where my gun
was," he exclaimed to me. "I suddenly had the horrible thought that maybe I'd
left it on my dresser!"...

Big Bullets Make Big Holes!
The debate over which cartridge and
which bullet type is best will never end as long as there are gun magazines,
advertising dollars to be spent, and different manufacturers of the latest and
greatest “wonderound.”
Understand this:
Handguns are woefully inadequate in their stopping power as
compared to a shotgun or rifle. So why do we
carry handguns? Because we can! They are small enough to always have on our
person for an emergency and they allow us to immediately respond in a defensive
manner. (If you know
you are going to a gunfight don’t be an idiot with a handgun -- take a shotgun
or rifle.)
Knowing that handguns are inadequate in terms of stopping power
as compared to a shotgun or rifle should lead you to want to
carry the biggest handgun that
you can readily conceal, in the biggest caliber, with the heaviest bullet loaded
as hot as you can handle it to deliver a couple of quick shots to the thoracic
cavity or a single round to the cranio-ocular cavity of an extremely dedicated
opponent.
You want big holes in your opponent and you want him bleeding through and
through. That means you want large, heavy bullets that penetrate.
Pretty simple, wouldn’t you say?
Yes, it is pretty simple and that’s the point.
No need to overthink it.
Focus on your ability, not the equipment, because it is YOUR ABILITY to place
the rounds you choose to carry in your gun that will determine whether you live
or die in a gun fight....

Combat Mindset - Decision Making
I had a serious decision moment a couple days ago, and I've been reflecting on
it since. Thought I'd lay it out for the group.
I was in a Walmart parking lot of all places. Honestly, I'm not making this up.
It really did happen in the often imagined place.
I'd just parked my truck, and as I was getting out I noticed a young woman
walking across the parking lot talking on her cell phone. Next I noticed a young
athletic man, dressed in a hoodie, with the hood up, running up behind her. I
though it might be legit, but it could be a purse snatch. I knew I wouldn't
engage a purse snatcher, but I was trying to get as good a description as
possible of the guy even though I couldn't see his face.
When he got to her he reached out, grabbed her by the arm and forcefully swung
her around. I heard her tell him to get his {expletive deleted} hands off of
her. Her tone of voice was forceful but not fearful, she obviously knew him, so
I slowed my pace. I'd been approaching rather rapidly from an angle that would
prevent the young man from seeing me around his hood.
The young man didn't get his hands off of her, he rather began forcefully
"escorting" her back toward the store. She didn't struggle with him, but it was
clear that she was offering token resistance....

So, here we are in an age where carrying a gun has become increasingly both

Or maybe it should be "frowned on if you do and DEAD if you don't". Some of us
are so eager to please others or at least reluctant to offend them, that we
either don't carry at all (unless we're with a certain group of friends) or are
paranoid about someone seeing it or finding out about it. Carrying concealed or

Don't Let This
Happen To You!
Guns Should
Not Blow Up!
Even though Front Sight's
growth has been explosive, the guns that we train with
do not
explode.
The reason I make that statement is because prior to opening Front Sight, in
numerous courses I attended as a student, I witnessed handguns blowing up…
This occurs when the barrel becomes
obstructed due to the previous round being a dud or squib (no powder in the
cartridge) so that the bullet does not have enough force from the primer charge
to exit the barrel and is followed by a full power round that sends the bullet
down the obstructed barrel.
The results are exciting, but you don’t want to be holding
the gun or next to the gun when it blows apart.
This can also occur when a
round has too much powder charge which creates excessive chamber pressure
leading to catastrophic failure of the locking mechanism.
This can also occur when soft lead bullets are used which create a build up of
lead on the breech face over time, which allows the slide to chamber the round
and the trigger to be pressed, but not fully lock the action into place. When
the weapon fires, the chamber pressure is not contained and the action explodes.
Here is a picture of what that looks like in a Glock pistol....

Facing shotgun
barrel, couple fought for their lives
BLUE MOUND — Grappling over a shotgun
with a 300-pound man who had just burst into his home and threatened his wife,
Keith Hoehn had but one thought.
"It was like a horror movie," he said. "I thought I was a dead man. We’re
fighting for our lives."
He and his wife, Kellie, both 34, fought with two gunmen early Wednesday, until
Keith got the shotgun away from the larger of the two attackers and turned it on
both of them.
Dakota Scott Benoit, 20, of Richland Hills, was fatally wounded, and John
Garland Pierson, 25, of Haltom City, was in critical condition and in police
custody at a hospital.
"Very overt, very crazy," is how Blue Mound Police Lt. Thomas Cain described the
fracas.
The attack began about 12:23 a.m., when two intruders kicked in the Hoehns’
front door.
"I was sleeping and all of a sudden they busted through the door," Keith Hoehn
said. "My wife had a 12-gauge in her face, and he told her, 'Don’t you scream,

FORCE ON FORCE CONTRAVERSY?
The subject of Force on
Force training is one that we should all consider. After all, what
are we actually training for? Do we train to avoid getting mugged by
a flat piece of cardboard that does not think move or try to hurt
you or are we training to deal with living breathing thinking
adversaries? The obvious answer is live adversaries. So if your
training regimen does not or has never included any Force on Force
component then how do you know whether what you are practicing
REALLY works or not? Maybe you train with some "guru" who has been
in many fights and never lost. All that really tells you is HE has a
grasp of his material and was successful. It does not tell you how
well you would fair using that in a real confrontation. So how do we
know? We have to test it.
Some may say "well what I do works in my IDPA matches". Great. You
are thoroughly ready to proactively face a 3 foot tall piece
unarmed of cardboard after being told to get ready in advance .
Again, not terribly realistic. There really is no reason to not
avail oneself of FOF training today. Years ago it was only really
available to military and police. But now however , with the wide
availability of non lethal airsoft guns. The technology is there so
that the average guy can spend $150 or so and be equipped to take a
force on force class. Of course there are also Simunitions guns if
you prefer to use marking cartridges, but the availability and price
of the guns and ammo is somewhat prohibitive.
This brings us to our first controversy. Is the Airsoft gun really
adequate for FOF training? There are some that make the argument
that there needs to be a "pain penalty" for screwing up in FOF
scenarios. I agree. What we are really doing is to some degree
hardwiring the ability to make good decisions at a very fast
subconscious level. In a real encounter we will not have long to
make a decision. If we just stand and dither over whether it is
"really happening to me?" or "what do I do now?" then we will likely
have waited to long to do anything useful. Getting shot with non
lethal yet painful projectiles reinforces that if we do not be
decisive and act quickly then bad things will happen. This is where
our subconscious starts compiling data for positive vs negative
outcomes where action is concerned. ...

"Hanover, Pennsylvania: Road Rage Ends in Death"
....As they continued to threaten that they had guns
and were going to kill people, for some unknown reason Need ran to the driver's
side door of my car and started pounding on the window, shouting at my fiancée
who was inside the car with the engine running. Fearing that Maria's life was in
danger because of his previous death threats, that's when I drew my weapon. I
ordered Need to step away from my car, which he did. He then returned to the
center of the parking lot, according to witnesses, and continued with threats
and deranged behavior.
I went to my car and stood at the driver's side door. Need turned back to me and
started coming at me with his arms waving and shouting "just shoot me." I
ordered him to stay back, but he kept coming. Then, when he was about four or
five feet from me, he put his hand into his pants pocket, and that is when I
fired my first shot into his left thigh. It didn't stop him from coming at me.
He grabbed my shirt, ripped off the top button and grabbed my right arm. That's
when I shot him the second time point-blank into his thigh. I was told later
that the bullets had severed his femoral artery and he had bled to death at York
Hospital. I was truly sorry he died, but knew I had made the right decisions.

Have You Thought About Gun-Lube..?
I want to share with you a post from our
private, members-only forum, and it's all about gun-lube.
The type of lubrication used in firearms is something that is often overlooked
by most people- myself included. The more I think about it though, the more
sense it makes to make sure that your firearm is properly lubricated.
Now I am no expert on gun lube, but I will say this- whenever I think of
lubrication, I think of "wet". Whether it's engine oil, electric motor oil, even
most gun-oils- it's all wet. But- I've learned that some of the best
gun lubes require that the weapon be wiped dry after applying. Just something to
keep in mind!
Now, the forum post that I'm about to share with you references one specific
brand of gun-lube, but I want you to know that I am not affiliated with them at
all.
I wouldn't mind being affiliated with them, and I'd have no problem sending you
this if I were (because, I would only affiliate with them if they were good!)-
my reason for telling you this, is because I have never actually tried this
brand of gun lube, so I'd hate for you to think I'm personally recommending
something that I haven't personally used.
Okay, here's the post by an anonymous USCCA member:...

How Can I hide my pistol AND stay comfortable..?
I'm from South Africa and a white male with a gun - because
of the political past - is seen as a racist. The problem is that the country is
still very unstable on the issue of crime - in the area I work you will still be
shot for your watch. I own a Taurus PT1 9mm- how do I carry it so that it can't
be observed by the public? I thought of a SOB [small of back] holster - it's
very hot here so a short sleeve shirt or T-shirt is what we wear - any

IDPA - Will It Get You Killed?
Randy Harris - Suarez International Staff Instructor
There are many shooters who participate in shooting sports like IPSC or IDPA. In
these sports the shooters engage a wide array of targets in little scenarios
that often require drawing from a holster, movement, target discrimination,
reloading, accurate shooting under time constraint and sometimes malfunction
clearance. These are all good skills to work on if we also carry a gun for
personal protection. Of course it is not training but it is good practice. But
there are those that argue that participating in IDPA or other action shooting
sports will build bad habits and can even get you killed. Let's look at that for
a minute.
The issues that people have are typically with use of cover, IDPA style reloads,
only allowing 11 rounds in the gun in the "hi cap" categories, and the
proactive nature of IDPA. The arguments ostensibly stem from people not wanting
to ingrain habits that are not tactically sound. Ok fine. That is a laudable
pursuit. The problem is that I think people sometimes do not look at context of
the problem or the big picture or understand that there is a way to play the
game and still be competitive and still work on skills that are real world
useful in a real confrontation. I also honestly think some naysayers run down
IDPA because they don't perform well at it. Lets look at some of the arguments....

Life Savers vs. Gun Nuts
The network news did not describe the Supreme
Court’s decision striking down a D.C. ban on handgun ownership as a ringing,
landmark affirmation of the right of citizens to own firearms, or an
acknowledgement that Americans must accept responsibility for self-protection.
On the nets, the prevailing theme was that the Court delivered a victory to
selfish advocates of an abstract right over community-minded public servants
eager to save lives.
CBS Evening News reporter Wyatt Andrews described the ruling as, “a victory for
a group of Washington, D.C. residents who challenged the 32-year-old D.C. ban on
owning handguns,” and played a clip of Heller saying: “I’m very happy that now
I’m able to defend myself.”
Andrews then observed, “Very unhappy, though, are D.C. officials, who argue the
handgun ban has kept thousands of guns off the streets and saved hundreds of
lives.” He played a clip of D.C. mayor Adrian Fenty saying, “More handguns in
the District of Columbia will only lead to more handgun violence.”....

Little Known (and rarely talked about) Firearms Training Secret
Here is the quick
background information:
If you have ever had any formal defensive firearms training from a top notch
instructor, you probably heard them say, “Focus on the front sight!” The drill
is to first line up the target; the top of the front sight; and top of the rear
sight followed by bringing your focus
sharply on
the front sight. Once you have established a sharp focus on the front sight, you
continue a smooth press of the trigger straight to the rear without disrupting
the sight alignment until the weapon fires.
This is so important I named our training institute
Front Sight
and created our logo after the sight picture!
(There are a few in the training industry who recommend “point shooting” but we
will dispel that myth in another e-mail)
But
where
on the Front Sight should you focus? The
Top Edge
is the answer.
So with that background information under your belt, allow me to share a little
known and rarely talked about (outside of Front Sight Firearms Training
Institute courses) firearms training secret that will greatly improve your
ability to deliver
precision
hits with your handgun…

"No Safe
Places"
Recently,
there were two Christian musicians who were leaving a recording studio and were
murdered for two dollars and their car. Initially, I paid little attention to
the news reports nor did I listen to the names of the two victims. Three days
later, I received an e-mail from a woman friend who had received her CHL by
taking my course along with her son and daughter. The e-mail read, "Hi Don, my
son, Steve, was murdered Thursday. His funeral is at...."
I sat there stunned. Steve had been licensed through my instruction. I had been
to a couple of activities that he and his mother attended - in both cases they
were armed. I knew Steve's mother believed as I do that you never go anywhere
unarmed if it is legal to carry in those places. I did not know Steve as well as
I did his mother, but I found him to be very likable and smart. In fact, I later
discovered that he was probably a genius. Of course after getting that terrible
news, I couldn't help wonder if he was armed that night. I assume that he wasn't
because of the deadly results of his encounter with two heartless thugs. Both
criminals were captured the next day. A television interview showed that one of
them was almost proud of what they had done. Apparently, he is feeling good
about being a "gangsta" now."....

OLD
CONTRAVERSIES – AGAIN
Recently at
warriortalk, the members have been discussing one of the old contraversies of
the internet...point shooting versus sighted shootings. Initially I though
"Wow! What will we discuss next? 9mm vs. 45? Weaver vs. Isoceles?" But then as
I read the discussion I saw that it was based more on the historical issues as
well as the manner of teaching. Here is part of my response to that
discussion.
On Modern Technique (MT for short)
MT is totally competition based. It was born in competitive
circles and not on the battlefield as some instructors say. Jeff Cooper used
the Bear Valley Gunslinger Matches as a test bed for what would work best (for
winning those matches). The matches involved draw and shoot against reactive
targets at roughly 7-10 yards. This is a whopping long distance in terms of
what range intervals we see actual gunfights take place (over 85% of gunfights
happen well inside of this range). Perhaps, and this is simply my own
conjecture, they kept these distances long to avoid any injury from the use of
back splash from the steel targets. In any case, the issue of incoming fire was
conspicously missing as was the need to do anything but draw and shoot.
What Cooper discovered was the best methods for winning the Bear Valley
Leatherslaps by studying what the winners used. Now is this bad on the street?
Not necessarily. As long as the parameters of the particular fight fit the same
parameters as the Leatherslaps, and call for those skills. Not all fights will
fit those parameters.
As a side note I would add this. If a Leatherslap against stationary targets can
be seen as a valid research tool, what can we say of our use of force on
force??...

OODA Loop & Combat Mindset
The OODA Loop model was developed by
Col. John Boyd, USAF (Ret). When Colonel John Boyd first introduced the OODA
(Observe-Orient-Decide-Act) loop concept during the Korean War, he was referring
to the ability possessed by fighter pilots that allowed them to succeed in
combat. It is now used by many other Combat oriented organizations.
I believe that in order to use the OODA Loop it must be used in conjunction with
the Combat Mindset for it to be effective in a Gunfight.
What is Combat Mindset? For the fighter, mindset is the conscious or
subconscious willingness to commit harm (lethal or non-lethal) against another.
When engaging in combat, mindset, more often than not, will be the determining
factor as to your success or failure, regardless of technical proficiency.
Anybody can train in a martial skill, but few have the mind and will to use
their skills for killing or serious injury. Mindset's partner is 'mental
trigger,' and this trigger is the defining moment that forces you to engage your
opponent with the goal of injury or death...

Pistol Transfer: Right to Left
If you study any of the combat martial arts, you
will find that they involve both sides of the body. They will teach you the left
side as well as the right side, so you are "fully developed." We see this in any
combat-oriented study from knife, sword, stick--even wrestling. Some systems
even teach the less dexterous side first, in an effort to equalize the different
sides of the body. Historically, we even read of warriors in ages past who could
fight right side or left side as necessary. King David's "Mighty men" are noted
to have been able to pull a bow right or left and swing a sword right or left.
Even in the gun world, before the onset of modern training, we see pictures of
early gunmen with two guns; one on each side....

Proper Shooting Platform
Any of the modern shooting
stances being taught today will
work for the first shot with a handgun if time and
accuracy are not critical.
Once you place speed, accuracy, quick follow-up hits, transition to long guns
and position shooting into the equation, there is one stance,
or should I say, "shooting platform" that has proven to be the best overall
choice.
You can shoot with any stance you wish at Front Sight. We will
always do our best to make you as good as we possibly can during the time you
spend with us.
However, we would like you to benefit from our hundreds of collective years
experience and our proven track record of tens of thousands of students trained
to levels that far exceed law enforcement and military standards.
For this reason we will teach you to become a "shooting platform" that moves as
a weapon, can transition to any kind of gun or any type of improvised field
position and still get fast and accurate hits.
It all starts with your shooting stance.
We recommend and teach the Modified Weaver Stance. If
you shoot with a different stance that is OK with us.
You will not be criticized or belittled in any way. Again, we are here to
improve your skills. We are not trying to make you good.
We want to make you great!...

Protection Within Reach
The idea is to give you a HUGE boost in
home-defense. Here's the logic: The (12ga) shotgun (#4 shot or similar) is the
undisputed king of home defense. It packs the meanest punch, it's shot spreads
to give you the best chance of hitting a target, and it's downright
intimidating! Everybody old enough to reason can recognize the sound of a
cycling shotgun.
The problem is, what do you do with your shotgun? You want it close to your bed,
but if it's leaned up in a corner, you have to do a rambo move to get to it and
ready yourself. Not to mention, you have to turn yourself away from an adversary
in order to grab it. If the shotgun is under your bed (as most are), you could
run into two problems. One, you might be too high off the ground to reach it
from where you are laying. Two, it could get bumped around, and it simply might
not be there when you need it. Not to mention... things can get REALLY dusty
under there.
If you find it difficult to execute a perfect draw while completely alert and in
front of a target... imagine how hard it would be if you were confused from just
having woke up to the sound of your bedroom door getting kicked in!
With 'The Back-Up' however, your shotgun is ALWAYS in the EXACT same, easily
accessible position. One of my first realizations, was "Wow, this thing REALLY
hides your gun!". And it does too, here are two pictures showing you what I
mean:...

When I first heard about this holster, I knew I wanted to try it. I had a few
concerns about it... but it was an idea that I had never tried before, and I
knew I at least wanted to give it a shot!
Once it came is the mail, I took it right out to my vehicle, and installed it.
It took about 60 seconds to install and get adjusted- the hardest part was
feeding it below the seat. This wouldn't be a huge problem in a big truck or SUV
(or even some cars), but once I got the strap under the seat and to the back,
the rest of the installation was a cinch (literally, hahahaha)...

Kobayashi Maru. The no-win scenario.
You're walking down an alley that you never should have been in, in the first
place. But you're lost, and you REALLY didn't want to walk to the end of the
block... Besides, it's broad daylight, and you've got your trusty sidearm locked
and loaded in your favorite carry position, and you've got an extra magazine
ready.
You walk into the alley, and shortly in you begin to come up on a dumpster
sticking out into the alley. You're nervous about what could be behind it, and
more nervous that you won't find out until it's too late.
Your gut tells you something is wrong when you get about 35 feet from the
dumpster. Just then, two armed men step out from behind the dumpster, and
simultaneously begin raising their pistols.
You have about 1/1000th of a second to decide what to do. Do you run? Do you put
your hands up? Do you draw and start blazing? Could even an expert come out of
this situation unscathed?
In the article, one of the Concealed Carry Columnists run through this scenario

The Pillow Holster
For this week's gear review, I'm looking at a VERY unique holster. But this
thing isn't a carry-holster! This thing is a holster design to be used while you
are fast asleep...
The idea of this thing, as its name suggests, is to add a little consistency and
safety to the common practice (for many people) of putting their carry gun
beneath their pillow while they sleep.Personally, I have never done this. I'm a
crazy sleeper, and often times I wake up and my pillow is NOT where is started.
That makes keeping a loaded pistol under my pillow a little worrisome, and it
makes using this pillow holster a little difficult.
BUT- I can't ignore the fact that a LOT of folks out there do sleep with their
pistols under their pillows. And if you're one of them, then I definitely think
this rig is worth a shot!
Here are the advantages to this holster, as I see them... First, if you usually
don't USE a holster, this makes the practice of sleeping with a pistol under
your pillow MUCH safer. Second though, and I think (safety aside) this is the
best advantage this holster gives you- is finally you can practice drills of
drawing your pistol consistently from the laying position.
For those who sleep with their guns on their nightstands, or loose in any other
way, your pistol is NEVER in the exact same spot. It might be ALMOST in the same
spot, but you can never be completely sure of where your pistol is, to the point
where you can grab it in the pitch dark....

The Right
Gun
and Ammunition for You
....You see, it seemed that
almost every school I attended had very strong opinions on what a serious
student should carry. They went to great lengths to promote a particular gun and
ammo package -- and of course sold them in their armory.
Some schools pushed their gun
and ammunition preference to the point that if you weren’t carrying or using
what they considered was “the best” (what they promoted) you were chastised and
belittled.
The reason we say,
"Any Gun Will Do — If YOU Will
Do" is because we really don’t care what gun
you choose to carry.
We are training YOU as the weapon. Your firearm is just a tool.
When you complete a course with us,
you can pick up ANY gun and shoot it well beyond the skill
level of 99% of the gun-owning population.
Please understand that you can bring what you
have and we will train you to use it well.
YOU DO NOT NEED TO GO OUT AND
BUY A NEW GUN TO TAKE OUR COURSES. In fact,
you are better off using your money for a training course or lifetime membership
because TRAINING ALWAYS
TRUMPS EQUIPMENT.
However, some choices are better than others
so let me share with you what to look for in a defensive handgun and ammunition…
In a gunfight, you are only going to be half as good and half as smart as you
are on your best day on the training range simply from the stress of a lethal
encounter.
For this reason alone you want the simplest, easiest gun to shoot well. The
more levers, buttons, options, and gadgets on your handgun the more likely you
will fumble, forget, and get fouled up. Sound crazy? It happens all the time
during the live-fire shooting house and home invasion simulators we put students
through so they can find out how they operate under the stress of a simulated
gun fight.
In a gun fight, you will never wish you had a smaller, more complicated gun or
less ammunition. You will want as big and
simple a gun as possible with as a much ammunition as possible to offset the
effects of stress in a lethal encounter.
So what is the biggest, simplest gun that carries the most ammunition?...

The Second Time, I Had a Gun
It still isn't easy to talk about. The intervening
decades have blunted some of the impact, but remembering is still difficult.
Evelyn Logan is a bright, articulate, dynamic woman with a strong personality,
but talking about it is still hard.
She was Oklahoma born and Texas raised, but by the time she was in her mid-20's,
she was a young mother living in San Francisco at the fringes of the hippy 60's,
and working for the Sheriff's office as a warrant clerk. Her grandmother flew in
for a visit, and when the visit was over, Evelyn took her to the airport and put
her on a plane home. Then Evelyn headed for her car. As soon as she got to a
deserted part of the airport, two men came up to her. They had a knife. They
were airport employees with keys to a nearby utility closet. They dragged her
into the closet and raped her....

The Stocked_Pistol
In
the dim past, when the first functional self-loading pistols became available,
it was examined as what we would today call a PDW (personal defense weapon).
Unlike the infantry rifle, or other long gun, this was meant to defend the user
and extend the capabilities of the one-handed pistol.
The first stocked self-loading pistol was the Borchardt, a clumsy but
functional for the day, pistol. It incorportaed a flat detachable stock.
Eventually Mauser and Luger expanded on the idea as well as Mr. Browning and Mr.
Webley. In fact, it was a common accessory for military pistols of the pre-WW2
era...and subsequent designs such as the HK VP-70 and others that followed.
Because of our ever protective government's infringements, having a stocked
pistol requires some footwork in terms of licenses and such, but it really only
costs an additional $200 for those who still live in free states. Not a big deal
really. So the question is...why?
Recently, I was exposed to the concept of the pistol caliber carbine. Our good
friend and staff instructor Karl Johnson relates how he favors such a weapon in
certain environments where a full assault rifle, or a shotgun might not be
desired. As well, I have discussed his with some acquaintances who favor an SBR
semi auto UZI for home defense, and as a compact PDW. I know another man who
owns a Skorpian VZ61 pistol that has been SBRd and has a stock. But none of
these aforementioned weapons have full auto capability so in reality, the rate
of fire of a semi auto Uzi is no different than that of a Glock.
The first big question I suppose is this. It is not a rifle, and only has the
ballistic capability of a pistol, so why add a stock to a pistol? In my studies
I have found that a stock does two things....

The White Light Followed By The Big Bang!
From: Dr. Ignatius Piazza Founder and Director Front Sight Resorts
www.frontsight.com
In my last report we discussed the fact that night sights by themselves are only
useful for about
20 minutes during a normal 24 hour period.
If it is too dark to see what is in your opponent's hands, then you can't really
identify a threat and you should not shoot, even if you can see your night
sights.
If it is light enough to identify your opponent as a threat, then is it light
enough to see your sights so you don't really need night sights.
Well what do you do when it is too dark to identify your opponent as a threat or
not?
You use a flashlight to light them up!
Sounds easy, but using a flashlight in the wrong manner can get you killed...

Two Online Tools for Shooting your Handgun..
You know, I've been talking a lot lately
about handgun accuracy.
Well, I was recently reminded of a VERY simple chart that helps BIG TIME when it
comes to diagnosing what you're doing wrong while shooting a pistol.
We all know that your bullets hit your target where your gun was aiming when the
shot fired. So it just makes perfect sense that we can use the location of where
your shots hit the target to determine exactly what went wrong with the shot.
Make sense?
Okay.. with that in mind, I have a couple EXTREMELY useful links for you.
They are both pictures that are going to help you with your pistol accuracy, by
telling you WHY your bullet hit where it did!!
Okay, if you are right handed, you should use the first link, and if you are
left handed, you should use the second...

him to the ground, both eyes open works fine. Try the same thing at 50 yards and
your results will not be as good.
So...and I know we have used the "c" word before, the Continuum applies here. It
fits in the same context as the moving continuum (from stationary to sprinting),
the sight continuum (from focus on sights to focus on threat), the rate of fire
continuum (from carefully pressing the trigger to machinegun mashing it as many
times as needed), and now the eye usage continuum (from both eyes open focusing
on the threat to one eye open only and focusing on the sights).
For close range gunfighting, both eyes open makes sense as it is simply a
slightly extended hand to hand fight.
For extended ranges...beyond what we would call CQB, I will close the
non-shooting eye (notice I did not say the non-dominant eye). This gives me
greater clarity of focus on the sights and a greater ability to align them
properly on the distant or difficult target.
Who shoots a rifle at 200 yards with both eyes open?...

What
You Can Do When the Front Sight is No Longer in Focus
It happens to all of us sooner or
later. The first sign is having to hold the
newspaper a little farther away to focus on the text. Over time it develops
into the need for reading glasses.
Well the good news with self defense shooting is if you can identify your target
as an immediate threat of great bodily injury or death, you just need to
get a good clear focus on the front sight and press the trigger without
disrupting the sight alignment to insure a good hit.
Remember that when you do it right, the target is blurry and the front sight is
in crystal clear focus!
But what happens when your eyes get so bad you can't get a good clear focus on
the front sight?

U.S. Concealed Carry
"Armed American Report"
for December 12, 2008
(New 12-19-08)
You're in a mall buying new shoes and hear automatic gunfire. Now what do you
do?
The following scenario doesn't belong to me and the
author will be revealed at the end (in time). Yet, since this is the rash of
events that have happened at least with a single gunman in the past (at many
shopping malls), it may also possibly come (in the future). So we should all be
prepared, which of course is why we carry, and why we're members of USCCA.
You and a buddy are in a shoe store buying shoes, in a relatively large suburban
shopping mall. You both have your .45 caliber pistols with you along with 1
spare mag of 17 rounds each in a fanny pack around your waist. Naturally you're
licensed to carry and this mall doesn't have the GFZ policy. In fact there is no
security guard station in the entire mall save for only one kiosk-type
information/security desk for the entire mall.
That security person will go down with the first BG's blast and he won't have a
chance to dial 911 or anyone else.
All of a sudden you both hear off the in the near distance small arms firing
long strings of fire (rat-tat-tat!) You also hear people, mainly women and
children, screaming! You hear more than one gun firing next door in the larger
JC Penney-type store, and you are aware of other distant sounds of firing as
well.
You see two Arab-looking BGs with Ingram SMGs, without barrel extensions, wildly
firing in a few stores just down the way from you opposite one another, each
firing into the store in front of them. Due to the high rate of fire these guns
aren't hitting much initially besides ceilings and floors, but still the BGs are
taking casualties.,,,,
