+ + G R A S S F I R E . O R G From the Desk of: Steve Elliott, President
Despite Sen. Dick Durbin's latest pseudo apology, he still must be stripped of
his leadership post (the #2 Democrat in the Senate).
Why is Grassfire still pressing this issue?
+ + Durbin didn't really apologize!
I challenge you to go and read Durbin's statement (see the link below) and find
a real apology in there. A few snippets:
"Occasionally words will fail us...." This isn't about words failing, it's about
a Senate leader failing!
"I raised legitimate concerns.... " Wrong again. Durbin's conerns are
illegitimate in the context of equating our troops with Hitler.
"I made reference to the Nazis, Soviets...." No, Durbin compared our troops TO
the Nazis!
"Historical parallels can be misused and misunderstood..." Durbin restates this
from last Friday's non-apology, further validating the fact that he drew the
historical parallel.
"I'm sorry if anything that I said cause any offense..." Notice how Durbin
doesn't apologize for SAYING something offensive! This is like your kids saying
they are "sorry" but not they are "wrong."
"Some may believe that my remarks crossed a line. To them, I extend my heartfelt
apologies..." Again, Sen. Durbin, you fail to admit that your remarks DID cross
a line!
Then, Sen. Durbin references an Abraham Lincoln quote that seems to indicate
that he thinks he'll be vindicated in the end!
He closed with this:
"I offer my apology for those offended by my words." Again, Durbin is
apologizing to the offended parties and not for the actual offense!
+ + Read it for yourself!
Lest you think I'm picking apart Durbin's words, please understand that every
word of Durbin's mea culpa was carefully crafted. This was not a haphazard
statement. And it means what it says -- Durbin did not admit he was wrong; just
that he's "sorry" that others took offense!
Read Durbin's statement for yourself and decide:

+ + Durbin Must Go!
I am calling on Grassfire team members to make two phone calls today, demanding
that Sen. Durbin be stripped of his leadership post (#2 Democrat in the Senate):
CALL MINORITY LEADER HARRY REID: Minority Leader Office: 202-224-5556
CALL MAJORITY LEADER BILL FRIST: Majority Leader Office: 202-224-3135
+ + Talking Points
#1 -- You are a Grassfire team member
#2 -- Sen. Durbin's apology was not acceptable.
#3 -- You are calling for Sen. Durbin to be removed
from his Minority Whip leadership post.
+ + Forward to your friends!
Let's not forget that Sen. Trent Lott was forced to resign as Majority Leader
for comments he made honoring a 100-year-old man! Durbin compared our troops to
Nazis!
