Richard Viguerie: Conservative New Media Beat Liberal Old Media

(Manassas, Virginia) Richard A. Viguerie, co-author of America’s Right Turn--How Conservatives Used New and Alternative Media to Take Power (Bonus Books, 2004), celebrated the defeat of the cloture motion in the Senate on the Amnesty Bill and attributed it to conservative New and Alternative Media and grassroots efforts to overcome the pressure from the White House and the Left.
Viguerie said conservatives using blogs, e-mail messages, websites, radio talk shows, cable TV, and direct mail were able to bypass the Left’s near monopoly of old media.
“Ordinary citizens were able to have their voices clearly heard in Washington, D.C., something that wouldn’t have happened a few decades ago,” he said.
“I dare say that for the last week, every blog and radio talk show in the nation was buzzing about this legislation. The opposition to President Bush’s amnesty program for illegal aliens was very intense. Even Senators who are normally isolated from public opinion felt the heat,” Viguerie said.
Conservative Movement Alive and Well
Conservatives Betrayed--How George W. Bush and Other Big Government Republicans Hijacked the Conservative Movement (Bonus Books, 2006), pointed to failures such as Harriet Miers’ nomination to the Supreme Court; the proposal to hand over management of U.S. ports to a company owned by the United Arab Emirates; the 2006 Republican election disaster; and the closing down of the phone bank of the Republican National Committee as indicators of the conservative movement’s growing separation from President Bush.Viguerie, who is also author of
“Most conservatives are agitated and angry at President Bush and Republican leaders,” he said. “These victories have emboldened conservatives to feel comfortable, even anxious, to challenge the Bush Administration and other Big Government Republicans on many other issues.”
“The base of the GOP is perilously close to open rebellion. Grassroots conservatives will be watching carefully to see if the President will try to heal the growing breach with conservatives or if he will risk losing much of the 32% of the electorate that still supports him,” Viguerie said.
