Call Durbin, Reid and Conyers!

As you know, Sen. Dick Durbin has equated "what Americans had done to prisoners in their control" to the actions of "Nazis, Soviets...Pol Pot or others." Despite the uproar those words have caused, Durbin has not backed down. In fact, in his recent non-apology, he actually affirmed his statement by calling it a "historical parallel"! (I have included Durbin's statements at the end of this message.)

You may have missed the mock impeachment inquiry held by Democrats in the U.S. Capitol last week, led by Michigan Rep. John Conyers. Conyers and fellow Democrats actually gathered in the U.S. Capitol and, with C-SPAN cameras rolling, proceeded as if they were conducting an actual impeachment of President Bush!

I am contacting Grassfire team members asking you to join me in taking immediate action on both these issues:

1. Dick Durbin should be stripped of his leadership post as the second-ranking Democrat in the Senate.

2. John Conyers needs to "cease and desist" his outrageous calls for impeachment proceedings. I am asking Grassfire team members to call Sens. Durbin and Reid as well as Rep. Conyers today and express your outrage.

Sen. Durbin -- Ask his office if he is still standing behind his statement. Then demand a retraction of his statement (again I've included it below):

DC office: 202-224-2152
Chicago office: 312-353-4942

Sen. Reid -- Tell Sen. Reid that you are calling for the Democrats to strip Sen. Durbin of his leadership post immediately (Durbin is the #2 Democrat in the Senate!). Republicans stripped Sen. Lott for less offensive statements than equating our military to Hitler and Pol Pot!

DC office: 202-224-3542

Rep. Conyers -- Tell his office you are offended that he used taxpayer funds to hold a mock impeachment hearing of the President. Politely say it is time to "cease and desist" these outrageous calls for impeachment.

Rep. Conyers' office: 202-225-5126

Thank you for taking action!

+ + Dick Durbin's statements

Original statement from Senate floor:

"If I read this to you and did not tell you that it was an FBI agent describing what Americans had done to prisoners in their control, you would most certainly believe this must have been done by Nazis, Soviets in their gulags, or some mad regime--Pol Pot or others--that had no concern for human beings. Sadly, that is not the case. This was the action of Americans in the treatment of their prisoners."

Here is the latest non-apology from Durbin:

"I have learned from my statement that historical parallels can be misused and misunderstood. I sincerely regret if what I said caused anyone to misunderstand my true feelings: our soldiers around the world and their families at home deserve our respect, admiration and total support."
