Dear Grassroots Freedom Supporter,
Congratulations!
Amendment 20, by Senator Robert Bennett (R-UT) and 13 cosponsors, was adopted 55-43.
Thank you for all you did to help pass Amendment 20 in the Senate, which deleted Section 220, to restrict grassroots communications, from S 1, the lobby reform bill.
I very much appreciate your effective leadership in this crucial matter.
You can see who voted for and against this vital amendment at
http://www.senate.gov/pagelayout/legislative/a_three_sections_with_teasers/votes.htm
Please thank those Senators from your state who voted with us. And let those Senators from your state who voted against us know you are disappointed and upset at their vote against grassroots communications.
Our victory was a direct result of your involvement.
However, we can’t celebrate our victory too long. This legislation will now be taken up in the House of Representatives, where the advocates of silencing the grassroots have many powerful allies.
Public Citizen (founded by Ralph Nader), which boasts of its influence with Speaker Nancy Pelosi, posted a message on its website which said, “We expect to be able to get those provisions into the House bill (and thus in the final bill)...We will take this battle to the People's House (and win there).”
But if good people like you will continue to let the American people and their Representative know about the attempts to stop grassroots communications, I believe can win in the House as well.
I’ll continue to keep you informed of developments through our Grassroots Freedom website at
and through special e-mail alerts.
Please keep us your good work. Our First Amendment freedoms depend on it.
Cordially,
Richard A. Viguerie
